It is proud to employ approximately 600 highly-trained, multi-skilled staff from diverse backgrounds throughout the organisation - from its 58,000m2 head office and yard facility in Hazelmere, in-house design and engineering, to fabrication, mechanics, maintenance and various live construction projects.

Under the leadership and vision of Executive Director, Gerry Hanssen, staff are committed to building the most economical, efficient, high-rise residential apartment developments in WA.

Every project the company has undertaken has been 100% successfully completed and delivered.

Hanssen continually strives to stay ahead of its competitors. Through the development and implementation of unique working and training models and a dedication to collaboration.

We believe strongly in training the next generation of tradies, workers and builders. Renewal is an integral part of progression allowing workers ranging opportunities, in the ever evolving Construction industry.

The total value of Hanssen’s portfolio is more than $2billion and growing.

OUR VISION

Hanssen aims to construct the best high-rise residential apartment developments by building a product with superior quality, economic and time efficiency. We plan to do this with effective co-ordination and co-operation, working together for the best outcome of the project.

OUR MISSION

Hanssen’s mission is to ‘Retain the right to manage’. In turn, we can create opportunities for every individual to develop their ability and enjoy job satisfaction. It is our ambition to allow year 11 and 12 students to gain work experience on our sites to entice them to work in the construction industry. We can provide willing young people the opportunity to do an apprenticeship in a trade and also develop skilled workers through traineeships.

OUR ADVANTAGE

Hanssen’s competitive advantages are diverse; the primary being the long-standing relationships between the Developer, Architect and our engineers & administration. Purchasing the majority of construction materials direct from reliable suppliers - aids in minimising errors, confusion and time delays. We also have buying leverage, by way of volume of apartments we are constructing at any given time.

Executive director Gerry Hanssen has over 55 years experience in the construction industry.

Gerry believes in “giving everyone a go” and is passionate about training, developing skills and empowering young people to become independant and self-governing. Using a meticulously designed working guide, known as the 'Hanssen Standard Details' he is able to educate, with step by step instructions containing picture and word format.

Similar to the IKEA instructions a unique but simple manual, allowing safe and effecient procedures from earthworks to structure to finishing, all aspects of building.

Gerry is actively involved in the community and a member of a number of associations. He’s also deeply spiritual, uncomfortably committed to telling the truth as he sees it, always striving doing the right thing - a rarity in an increasingly unforgiving world.

Gerry was born in the Netherlands where he studied in construction and gained a Diploma in Building. His love of challenge and excitement led him to Australia on a working holiday visa. After many years of working in various construction roles in Perth and regional Australia, Gerry decided it was time to start his own company and Hanssen Pty Ltd commenced in 1992. Committed to 'Making a difference to the Construction Industry'.

The first project for Hanssen was the Lions Eye Institute in Nedlands where Gerry worked closely with Professor Ian Constable AO and his team to design and construct the leading research facility. In 1996 he met Executive Chairman of Finbar John Chan, where a unique relationship has formed and continues today.

 “Relationships are very important to us - we work hard to build and grow relationships with our clients and ensure their expectations are exceeded.” – Gerry Hanssen

HANSSEN’S COMMITMENT

‘Making a difference’ is more than a tagline to Hanssen, it is a promise and a commitment to its clients, its staff and the city it operates and lives in.

Hanssen is making a difference to:

  • the construction industry, by using its own tried and proven industry systems and processes on every job;

  • the Perth skyline, by building the tallest apartment complex in WA and influencing the look and feel of the city through quality design and materials;

  • the communities where its developments are being undertaken, including over 60 projects from Mandurah to South Perth, from the CBD to Karratha; and

  • people’s lives, by continually and consciously choosing to hire people from diverse backgrounds - young and old, blue collar and white collar - equal opportunity permeates throughout the Hanssen community.

The company has integrated 100's of ex-prisoners into on-site work programs to build their confidence, skills and capacity. Currently there are approximately 80 ex-prisoners working across the company, changing their lives for their families and giving back to society. Hanssen has also employed over 1,450 apprentices into trades - an achievement recognised by the Apprentice Employment Network: 2019 Host Employer of the Year Award.

“Passionate people are winners - they never fail, and they inspire others to learn and grow. By providing the opportunity to develop their skills and their passion, we create a hard-working, ethical workforce where workers train the next generation to do the same. Others say they cannot afford to train, we say you cannot afford not to train.”
